What is Labiaplasty Surgery?
A highly effective aesthetic procedure, labiaplasty is a minimally invasive labia surgery performed to correct labial irregularities as well as labial hypertrophy (enlarged inner labia). The procedure focuses on reshaping irregular and asymmetrical labia minora. Women whose labia minora (inner lips of the vagina) protrude from the labia majora (outer lips of the vagina) may experience difficulty with day-to-day activities as a result of labial hypertrophy.
Labiaplasty is an effective method of labial reduction for women seeking to alleviate discomfort caused by chafing of the labia minora. This procedure for labial reconstruction has helped numerous women eliminate pain and discomfort from their daily lives while also achieving beautiful aesthetic results and more pleasure during sexual intimacy.
Our advanced labiaplasty clinic in Michigan provides highly satisfactory vaginal rejuvenation services with minimal downtime. If you are considering undergoing a labiaplasty in Michigan, Dr. Mona offers a complimentary one-on-one consultation where you can discuss your goals and concerns with her privately. She will assess your eligibility for the surgery and provide detailed information regarding the specific labiaplasty procedure that would benefit you most.

How is Labia Surgery Performed?
Labiaplasty involves the reduction or reshaping of the labia. The procedure may be performed under general or local anesthesia where the labiaplasty surgeon uses a laser and radiofrequency knife to alter the labial tissue. The edges of the incision site are then stitched with fine, self-dissolving stitches. A labiaplasty surgery typically takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes.
There are two techniques by which this surgery is approached— the trim technique and the wedge technique. Our professional surgeon, Dr. Mona has completed thousands of successful vaginal rejuvenation surgeries and is an expert in labia minora reduction.

What To Expect During Labiaplasty
- During labiaplasty, the surgeon reshapes or reduces the size of the labia minora (inner lips) and sometimes the labia majora (outer lips).
- The procedure usually takes 1-2 hours and is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference and surgeon’s recommendation.
- Implementing the trim or wedge technique, the surgeon trims excess tissue, contours the labia, and closes the incisions with dissolvable stitches.
- Most patients are able to return home the same day after the surgery.
- After the procedure, swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common, but these typically subside within a few weeks.
- Full recovery generally takes four to six weeks.
- Patients should avoid strenuous activities and sexual intercourse during the recovery period.

Labiaplasty Techniques
Trim Labiaplasty Technique

The trim method is the most widely opted for labial reduction procedure. This time-tested procedure involves thinning and shortening the labia minora (inner labia) to attain a symmetrical, natural appearance that is more flattering. The trim technique surgery has an excellent track record of high success rates accompanied by highly satisfied patients.
During the trim technique, the labiaplasty surgeon makes a linear cut curving along the external labial edges to remove unwanted tissue. Based on patient preference, labiaplasty may be performed under general or local anesthesia. Once healed, the labia minora naturally fits within the labia majora.
The main benefit of the trim technique for labia reconstruction is the removal of the thickened or pigmented edges of the labia minora. This results in thinner, symmetrical labia. Women who desire a more “delicate” appearance opt for this technique as it allows the surgeon more flexibility in correcting the asymmetries between both sides of the labia.
Wedge Labiaplasty Technique

The wedge technique is an alternate surgical technique for labia minora reduction that serves a similar purpose as the trim technique. However, this technique involves the removal of a “wedge” of tissue that is V-shaped, from both the left and right labia minora. The incised edges are then sutured back together, minimizing the protruding labia.
Unlike the trim method, this technique leaves the natural contours of the labial edges unaltered. The incision is made to the inner portion of the labia instead of on the edge, and therefore is out of sight. Due to these reasons, the wedge technique is a popular choice among women looking for more subtle results.
Also, patients who suffer from discomfort, functional limitations and labial protrusion due to enlarged labia minora are ideal candidates for the wedge technique.
This procedure may also be performed under general or local anesthesia according to the patient’s wishes.

How To Know If Labiaplasty Is The Right Choice
Labiaplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can help address concerns arising due to the size or shape of the labia. Consider the following physical and emotional symptoms when determining if labiaplasty is the right option for you.
- Persistent Physical Discomfort: If you experience irritation, chafing, or pain from your labia during daily activities like walking, cycling, exercising, or sitting for extended periods, labiaplasty could offer relief.
- Pain During Sexual Activity: Pain during sexual intercourse due to the labia pulling, stretching, or twisting causes discomfort and impacts intimacy. Labiaplasty might help enhance your comfort and sexual experience.
- Aesthetic Concerns: If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your labia and it affects your self-esteem or confidence, labiaplasty can provide aesthetic improvements, helping you feel more comfortable with your body.
- Difficulty with Hygiene: If you find that excess labial tissue makes it difficult to maintain personal hygiene, leading to irritation or infections, labiaplasty may be a practical solution.
- Emotional Distress: If you often feel anxious, embarrassed, or self-conscious about your labia, and this is impacting your quality of life, labiaplasty could improve your mental and emotional well-being.
- Lack of Success with Non-Surgical Solutions: If you have tried adjusting your lifestyle, clothing, or hygiene routines without being able to resolve discomfort or aesthetic concerns, labia surgery may be the next step to consider.

Common Reasons Why Women Choose To Undergo Labiaplasty
Women opt for labiaplasty for various reasons, often related to improving physical comfort or enhancing their body image.
- Relief from Physical Discomfort: Many women seek labiaplasty to alleviate discomfort caused by enlarged or asymmetrical labia, which can lead to pain during activities like exercising, sitting, or wearing certain types of clothing.
- Improved Sexual Comfort: Pain or discomfort during sexual activities is a frequent reason women choose labiaplasty, as the procedure can help reduce issues like stretching or twisting of the labial tissue.
- Aesthetic Concerns: Some women feel self-conscious about the size, shape, or symmetry of their labia. Labiaplasty offers the opportunity to achieve a more proportionate or aesthetically pleasing appearance.
- Post-Childbirth Changes: After giving birth, the labia can become stretched or damaged. Labiaplasty is often chosen to restore the labia to a pre-pregnancy appearance.
- Enhancing Confidence: Many women pursue labiaplasty to improve their self-confidence, particularly if they feel embarrassed or insecure about how their labia look, whether in intimate situations or when wearing tight clothing.
- Hygiene and Health: Enlarged labia can make hygiene more difficult, leading to frequent irritation or infections. Labiaplasty helps reduce the risk of these issues by removing excess tissue.
- Age-Related Changes: Over time, the labia can lose elasticity and become elongated. Labiaplasty offers a way to rejuvenate the area and address these natural changes.
- Desire for Symmetry: Asymmetry in the labia is common, but for some women, it causes discomfort or dissatisfaction. Labiaplasty can correct this imbalance and provide a more symmetrical look.
Labiaplasty Surgery Benefits
Labiaplasty is widely popular among women unsatisfied with the look or physical experience of their vaginal area. While it is essential to understand that all women are unique and there is no ideal shape or size of the labia, there are methods of labial reduction that help attain the desired results.
There are alternate, non-surgical methods of altering the labia minora; however, they may not be as accurate and effective in achieving the results that are possible by professional labia surgery. Labiaplasty can be a life-changing procedure if executed properly. Our expert labiaplasty surgeon, Dr. Mona, performs the surgery adhering to the highest medical standards at our state-of-the-art labiaplasty facility in Michigan.
Labiaplasty surgery:
